Ibnu Khaldun ialah pemikir Islam bertaraf dunia sepanjang zaman. Beliau banyak membentangkan teori kemasyarakatan mendahului zamannya beberapa abad. Buku karangannya berjudul Muqaddimah yang bermaksud pendahuluan, diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa-bahasa dunia di timur dan barat, walaupun ia adalah pendahuluan kepada buku sejarah karangannya. Akhirnya kitab Muqaddimah sahaja yang dikaji  kerana analisa ilmu kemasyarakatan yang menarik sehingga Ibn Khaldun diberi gelaran bapa ilmu kemasyarakatan.
