Ancient Epoch

Pythagoras
Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher who lived between 580-520 B.C. He believed that everything was related to mathematics and once said "all is number".
Pythagoras started a school in Greece, which had many students and made great contributions to the field of mathematics. He is most famous for his proof of an important formula in geometry.
Archimedes
Archimedes was a Greek mathematician and engineer who lived between 287-212 B.C. His greatest contributions are in the field of geometry, where he did much work with circles and their properties.
Legend has it that Archimedes discovered a famous theory while taking a bath. He was so excited that he ran naked through the streets of Syracuse shouting "Eureka, eureka (I have found it)!".
Aristotle
Aristotle was a Greek philosopher who lived between 384-322 B.C. He was one of the greatest thinkers of the world and wrote on every major area of thought.
Aristotle thought that the Earth was at the center of the universe. Now we know that the Sun is at the center of our solar system...and that our solar system certainly isn't at the center of the universe!
Democritus
Democritus was a Greek philosopher who lived between 470-380 B.C. He believed that everything in the universe was made up of tiny, indestructible particles called atoms.
Democritus had many remarkable insights for his time. He understood that the Milky Way was a large collection of stars and also thought that space was endless.
Plato
Plato was a Greek philosopher who lived between 427-327 B.C. He founded the Academy in Athens, a school which made many important scientific discoveries in ancient times.
Plato believed that knowledge was good for one's soul and wrote many books on how to improve the quality of life.
Ptolemy
Ptolemy was a Greek astronomer who lived between 85-165 A.D. He put together his own ideas with those of Aristotle and Hipparchus and formed a unified model of the universe. Ptolemy believed that the Earth was at the center of the universe and all other heavenly bodies circled it, a view which held for 1400 years until the time of Copernicus.
Ptolemy is also famous for his work in geography.
Nicholas Copernicus
Nicholas Copernicus was a Polish asrtonomer who lived between 1473-1543. A long time ago, people believed that the Earth was the center of the universe. Copernicus changed this belief when he introduced a model of the solar system that was centered around the sun. He claimed that all the planets, including Earth, moved in orbits around the sun.

The Social Network: Communicating in code

By  Jim Emerson  on  October 2, 2010 9:43 PM  |   Permalink  |  Comments (48) "When an individual enters the presence of others, they commonly seek to acquire information about him already possessed. They will be interested in his general socio-economic status, his conception of self, his attitude toward them, his competence, his trustworthiness, etc. Although some of this information seems to be sought almost as an end in itself, there are usually quite practical reasons for acquiring it. Information about the individual helps to define the situation, enabling others to know in advance what he will expect from them and what they may expect from him. Informed in these ways, the others will know how best to act in order to call forth a desired response from him." -- from "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" by Erving Goffman (1959) Relationship status: Interested in: -- Facebook (2004) The actual Mark Zuckerberg is said to have taken fencing w...

Harapkan Pegar, Pegar Makan Padi

Today I’m going to talk about a rather important issue in Malay language; which is lost in translation of words from Jawi to Rumi. Tiada pagar makan padi. Tetapi burung pegar. Kesilapan berlaku disebabkan perubahan ejaan rumi daripada jawi.    Namaku Si Pegar, bukan Pagar!
